The Legacy of the US Marine Corps' EA-6B Prowler: The Role of VMAQ-3 "Moon Dogs" in Electronic Warfare

The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is known for its ability to conduct expeditionary operations and support a wide range of missions. One of the aircraft that has been integral to these efforts is the EA-6B Prowler, operated by Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 3 (VMAQ-3), also known as the "Moon Dogs."

The EA-6B Prowler is an electronic warfare aircraft designed to jam and disrupt enemy communications and radar systems. It entered service in the USMC in 1977 and has been a vital part of its electronic warfare capabilities ever since. The aircraft has a crew of four, consisting of two pilots and two electronic countermeasures officers (ECMOs), who are responsible for operating the electronic warfare equipment.

VMAQ-3, based in Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, has been operating the EA-6B Prowler since its establishment in 1952. The squadron has a rich history, having participated in every major conflict the USMC has been involved in since the Korean War. The "Moon Dogs" nickname comes from the squadron's emblem, which features a howling dog with a moon in the background.

VMAQ-3 has been involved in a number of operations and exercises around the world, including supporting operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. During these operations, the EA-6B Prowler has been used to disrupt enemy communications and radar systems, allowing other aircraft to carry out their missions without interference. The aircraft has also been used for intelligence gathering and surveillance, allowing US forces to better understand the enemy's movements and capabilities.

In addition to its operational capabilities, the EA-6B Prowler has also been used for training and development. VMAQ-3 has worked closely with the US Navy and other USMC units to develop tactics and techniques for electronic warfare, helping to improve the effectiveness of US forces in the field.

However, after decades of service, the EA-6B Prowler is now being retired, with the last operational flight of the aircraft taking place in March 2019. It is being replaced by the EA-18G Growler, a newer, more advanced electronic warfare aircraft. While the retirement of the EA-6B Prowler marks the end of an era, VMAQ-3 and the "Moon Dogs" continue to play a vital role in the USMC's electronic warfare capabilities with the new EA-18G Growler.

In conclusion, the EA-6B Prowler and VMAQ-3 "Moon Dogs" have been an integral part of the USMC's electronic warfare capabilities for over four decades. The aircraft and squadron have played important roles in operations and exercises around the world, and their legacy will be remembered as they transition to the new EA-18G Growler.
